A little about Cartmel & Cark
The village of Cartmel, traditionally classed more Lancashire than Cumbria, The Village of Cartmel is located on the South Lakeland peninsula just outside Morecambe Bay. The village of Cartmel houses the Priory of St Mary and St Michael the village Cartmel used to serve local fishermen and cocklers. The name Cartmel originated from the old Scandinavian katr and melr, translated as sandbank by rough stony ground.
Cartmel has many winding streets lead into Cartmel square. You will see many whitewashed houses - slate roofs, Cobbled forecourts. The arch of the medieval gatehouse 1330, is the main part of Cartmel square, It was used as a lock-up , artists studio, craft shop, and local museum after its sale. The National Trust acquired the building 1946, the building now houses a Heritage Centre exhibiting history of Cartmel. Cartmel has a 15th century Pub - The Cavendish Arms a low beamed ceiling and planked floors creating the perfect history backdrop for a relaxing drink or meal.
Cartmel race course
Cartmel hosts the smallest UK Hunt racecourse in Britain, the course can be found at the opposite end of the village from the church. It is said the Cartmel monks, for Whitsun amusement, started the races that still take place today.
Everywhere you turn in Cartmel you will see a great history whether its pathways or houses this rural peninsula has one of south Lakelands oldest villages.
Things to do in Cark & Cartmel
Holker Hall - A great hall owned by Lord Cavendish - Fine gardens, motor museum many attractions throughout the year - A great location for Hot air ballooning over the lake district.
