A little about Stavely & the Kentmere Valley
Staveley situated on the edge of the River Kent & River Gowan, close to the heart of the Lake District, Windermere. The town of Stavely is littered with grey stone buildings and traditional pubs. Stavely was inhabited from 4000 BC by farmers then followed by Romans.
The town of stavely houses many historic buildings including a very primitive Methodist Chapel erected in 1834 and a Wesleyan erected in 1836 also St Margaret's Church built in 1388. Transportation & Industrial Revolution brought prosperity to Stavely and the Kentmere Valley, Bobbin turning was the primary industry till 1850, its demise, unlike other industries among them were the manufacturing of motorcycles, diatomite & photographic paper which continued to thrive. A café and small complex now exist on the site of an old wood mill.
Stavely is the perfect place to start when exploring The Kentmere Valley & specifically Garburn Pass, the valley is situated on the east side of Stavely. The Garburn Pass is a great place for mountain biking, technical terrain including very rocky bridalways with many opportunities for jumps. There is many trails in the Kentmere for either walking, hiking, mountain biking, trail biking, 4x4 (currently being looked into) & running.
