A great symbol of Windermere is St. Martin's Church it has stood on the same foundation for over 1,000 years. Originally the church was burnt down and rebuilt in 1484, then restored in 1870. the building contains 15th century stained glass windows, depicting red & white stripes with three stars, arms of John Washington closely related to George Washington, the first president of America born in Warton in Lancashire.
Bowness-on-Windermere was well known to the poet William Wordsworth: The White Lion, now the Royal Hotel was patronised by him and mentioned in 'The Prelude'. Wordsworth was a regular user of the ferry, which crosses Lake Windermere.
Windermere has a great car ferry which crosses Lake Windermere between Ferry Nab and Ferry House linking the villages of Hawkshead and Sawrey.
