Lake District - Windermere & Bowness

Windermere and Bowness situated in a picturesque area on the east side of Lake Windermere, this Lake district resort is Cumbria's most popular destination. Windermere is busy all year round, ranging from people who come to enjoy the facilities of the Lake Windermere for sailing, fishing and boating, or those who come to relax and bask in the the Lake District relaxing atmosphere.

Lake Windermere, a water highway for centuries, headquarters of the Royal Windermere Yacht Club. Great for cruising, water-skiing, underwater swimming and yachting. Lake Windermere is allways bustling with ferries, yachts and boats and take in the views of the lakeside maybe you will see a boatbuilder merrily working on their boat.

Windermere and Bowness have a range of different syles of property, Victorian and Edwardian buildings litter the streets of Bowness on Windermere.

A great symbol of Windermere is St. Martin's Church it has stood on the same foundation for over 1,000 years. Originally the church was burnt down and rebuilt in 1484, then restored in 1870. the building contains 15th century stained glass windows, depicting red & white stripes with three stars, arms of John Washington closely related to George Washington, the first president of America born in Warton in Lancashire.

Bowness-on-Windermere was well known to the poet William Wordsworth: The White Lion, now the Royal Hotel was patronised by him and mentioned in 'The Prelude'. Wordsworth was a regular user of the ferry, which crosses Lake Windermere.

Windermere has a great car ferry which crosses Lake Windermere between Ferry Nab and Ferry House linking the villages of Hawkshead and Sawrey.

A truly magical reenactment of Beatrix Potters books, meet such lovable world renown characters such as : Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-duck and many more. The Windermere Steamboat Centre in Rayrigg Road, houses a unique collection of historic steamboats and motorboats. Look out for events throughout the whole season : British Classic Motorboats, model boats and steamboats rally.

Rydal Mount and Gardens
